5 Apple Cider Vinegar Benefits & Use on Natural Coily Hair Care

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is made from fermenting pulverized apples. ACV has many applications and one of these is as a hair wash to improve scalp health, strengthen hair, and enhance shine.

Natural coily hair and infact most hair thrives in an environment of acidity of pH 4-5. This is because the hair’s natural pH is acidic and between 4-5 – 5.5. This is one of the many reasons that understanding pH balance and applying it to your hair care regimen is so important.

Apple cider vinegar is natural very acidic like most vinegars are, it has a pH of 23, so dilution with water is key when using it on natural hair.

There are other important benefits apple cider vinegar can add to your hair regimen. This includes:

1 . Acts a cleanser and clarifier for the scalp

ACV helps to remove buildup of sebum on the scalp. Rinsing your hair with apple cider vinegar, also helps to remove buildup that resulting from the use of many different styling products.

2. Add shine to hair

The cuticles of damaged hair are lifted and raise. An ACV rise will help the cuticles lay flatter and which improves the shine. This also helps the tangles hair remain flat and ease through the tangles in the hair.

3. pH balances the scalp and hair

Soap and relaxers that are very alkaline raises the hair pH and makes it negatively charged. This makes your coils more porous, with lifted and ruffled cuticles that contribute to a dull, frizzy, easily tangled and a high hair breakage.

Apple cider vinegar lowers the pH of your hair to the isoelectric point or slightly below it, which allows the hair to be sealed flat with a smooth outer layer of interconnected cuticle scales. Natural Hair is on the also on the acidic side of the pH scale and has an ideal pH of 4.5 to 5.5, which is close to that of an apple cider vinegar rinse (pH 3). This can really help balance out the pH of your hair.

Conditioners based on quaternary ammonium compounds thrive in lower hair pH. It allows for better adhension. So if you apply your leave conditioner or hair conditioner after an ACV rinse or treatement, it will help you hair lock in the moisture better.
